These are the private utilities available to Eagan residents. For water and sewer, see City Utilities.

Cable/Internet

Comcast is authorized under a franchise agreement to provide service in Eagan. The City only has authority over cable services. Satellite TV providers represent an additional option. Satellite TV providers do not need a franchise to operate and do not offer local Eagan community channels.

Electric Services

The majority of Eagan homes receive electrical service from Dakota Electric, but a portion of northern Eagan is serviced by Xcel Energy. Click on the map below to view a large version of the service map.

Report a Power Outage

All emergency or hazardous situations involving power outages such as downed or sparking power lines should be reported immediately by calling 9-1-1.

All other reports of outage or questions regarding power service should be directed to the individual company.

Before you call:

  • Check to see if your neighbors or nearby streetlights are out of power.
  • If you are without power, check your circuit breakers and fuse box to see if the problem is limited to your home's electric system.

Fiber

Fiber Optic Cable Installation in Eagan

If you see non-City crews working in a right-of-way along a street near you, or in backyard drainage and utility easements, they may be installing fiber optic cable. The contractor's vehicles should be marked with the company logo.

What will the cables do?

Provide faster internet service to homes and businesses in Eagan.

This is the result of a bipartisan bill passed by the federal government to accelerate access to high speed internet for all. This work is not being ordered by the City of Eagan but the companies have been permitted to perform the work.

Before starting work in a neighborhood, the contractor is expected to provide customer service contact information to property owners.

There are multiple phases for underground fiber projects, here is a summary:

  1. Utility Locates: Underground work requires Gopher State One Call locate flags and paint to mark existing utilities.
  2. Mainline Construction: Underground drilling for the main conduit line including installation of handholes, pedestals etc.
  3. Cable Pulling: Fiber is pulled through the conduit liner.
  4. Restoration of the disturbed area: Restoring concrete, asphalt, sidewalks, grass etc. Turf restoration comes in 2 parts - 1. Filling the holes with sand to make the area safer and minimize settling. 2. Return and fill with black dirt and seed. This process can occur up to 2 weeks after construction.

Understanding right-of-ways and easements:

In most Eagan residential neighborhoods, the City controls a 50 to 60-foot-wide right-of-way dedicated to the City through a plat or easement. Land within the right-of-way can be used for streets, sidewalks, public and private utilities, etc. A typical street is 30-36 feet wide and is centered in the right-of-way. Approximately 10-15 feet of public right-of-way exists on either side of the street; therefore, the private property line is typically 10-15 feet behind the curb and gutter.

Utility easements may exist on private property adjacent to the right-of-way. Utility easements grant the rights for utilities such as gas, electric and communication lines, including fiber optic cables, to be located on private property within the easement area.
